A WOMAN who has been in a coma for 14 years after nearly drowning shocked medics after suddenly giving birth in her hospital bed, sparking a rape probe.
Police have launched a sex abuse investigation at Hacienda Healthcare after the patient, who had spent years in a vegetative state, began “moaning” in her bed. Healthcare staff flocked to her hospital bed after hearing the noises, but had no idea she was pregnant or in labour until the baby was born. The condition of the woman and the gender of the baby remains unknown, CBS reports. Police fear the woman had been raped in her hospital bed and impregnated by a mystery attacker.
Sources said the woman, who has not been named, required 24-hour care and that “many people” had access to her room in the hospital in Phoenix, Arizona.
A source said: “From what I’ve been told, she was moaning. And they didn’t know what was wrong with her.
The source said the woman had no way of defending herself, adding “none whatsoever. Not even able to communicate the fact that she was pregnant.
“I was told that as of now, if a male staff needs to enter a female room, they need to bring in a female employee with them.”
Hacienda HealthCare spokeswoman Nancy Salmon said: “Hacienda Healthcare has been in business in the valley for over 50 years, and has an outstanding reputation providing high quality specialised care for our patients.
“As a Healthcare provider, we cannot comment on any patient due to Federal and State privacy laws. Additionally, we cannot comment on any ongoing investigations.
“We can say that our patients’ and clients’ health and safety is our number one priority and that we always cooperate, when asked by any agency, in an open and transparent way.”
Phoenix Police Sgt. Tommy Thompson said: “The matter is currently under investigation.”
