Supreme Head Quarters 1, Guess who was in the car then?

SHQ 1: abbreviation for “Supreme Head Quarters 1” on the license plates for Brig Yar’Adua’s Peugeot 504 at the Lagos Ibadan Expressway launch on August 20, 1978. Yar’Adua’s motorcade is flanked by an Armored Personnel Carrier.

The Peugeot 504 was once ubiquitous on Nigerian roads and was used by the Obasanjo military regime as the official government vehicle for top officials, a departure from the use of more luxurious brands like the Mercedes Benz and Rolls Royce. The use of the locally assembled Peugeot 504 was seen as a “low profile” initiative.

Brig Yar’Adua’s official title was Chief of Staff Supreme Headquarters. The role of Chief of Staff, Supreme HQ (COS SHQ) was a Nigerian military regime creation that functioned in a deputy head of government capacity.

When IBB became head of the Nigerian government in 1985, he styled himself “President” and changed the title of COS SHQ to “Chief of General Staff”, appointing Commodore Ebitu Ukiwe to the post.
