President Muhammadu Buhari has reportedly asked Nigerians not to re-elect governors who could not, in their first terms, pay civil servants salaries even though they collected bailouts from the federal government.
Buhari, the presidential candidate of the APC ahead of the 2019 election, warned Nigerians to vote for competence.
According to the report, the president said he saw no justification in governors collecting bailout funds from the federal government and still refusing to pay salaries and pensions.
I wonder how these governors are able to sleep knowing that they have refused to pay workers their wages.
These workers have families to cater for, they pay rent, pay school fees, Hospital bills and food for their families,” the president reportedly said.
The report quoted the president as saying that the Nigerian constitution gives governors the independence to spend their funds without interference.
He said this was why some of the governors are abusing the privilege by refusing to work for the people.
Buhari advised Nigerians to use their voting rights to make sure that they only vote for people who would deliver.
The report said that Buhari spoke at the inauguration of the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential campaign council.
We have insisted that votes must count and have maintained a policy of non-interference in elections.
Let me reiterate my commitment to free and fair elections. If there is one legacy I want to leave, is the enthronement of democracy as a system of government, he said.
